Red wax, loosened hair, a cold quilt and rain through wutong: longing becomes evidence inside a cooling room
Wen Tingyun's Geng Lou Zi begins close to the body: incense burner, wax tears, painted hall, faded brows and loosened hair keep the listener indoors. Only in the second half does third-watch rain cross the wutong tree and strike the empty steps leaf by leaf, sound by sound. The viewpoint does not travel, yet hearing keeps widening the room. The weight lies not in an abstract declaration of longing, but in a cold body, an unfinished night and rain counting time. The setting follows that route from red candle to dawn, letting Lingwan carry each short phrase like a drop and turn silence into narrative.

Its first line reuses the original phrase ‘leaf by leaf, sound by sound’; the lines about red wax shining toward dawn, a quilt cold as water and hearing separation inside third-watch rain are contemporary additions or adaptations. They give the melody a returning structure, but must not be back-attributed to the late-Tang poet. The archive therefore holds two facts together: the original lyric appears complete inside its marked sections, and the song is not merely a word-for-word setting.
