The footsteps behind stop, but the speaker does not fall. The same small English story of growing independence finds a different setting in each child-voice arrangement.

I was doing it myself before he let go.
English · boy-treble direction · upright piano · 72 BPM · plain held notes
At first, someone promises to keep holding on. Then the running footsteps behind stop, and the speaker continues alone. Letting go is not presented as abandonment. The refrain finds a surprise: independence had begun before the supporting hand was released.
Later, the helper says something was shouted, but the speaker heard no words, being busy staying upright. Courage becomes small and specific. Growing up need not arrive as a grand declaration; sometimes it is the stretch of road on which one does not fall.
This edition’s creative direction asks for plain, held English notes over a spare, measured upright-piano pulse. Without requested ornamental runs, attention can rest on the discovery that the speaker was already doing it alone.
