Creative direction on Suno
Roots soul ballad, dry restrained drums and warm, uncluttered mix; eight-bar tremolo guitar hook opens, with Hammond organ, melodic bass and tenor sax answering the lead, then a sax interlude and guitar-and-voice bridge; rough-warm low-to-mid voice with natural grain, small cracks and open full-voiced phrasing; steady 4/4 at 86 BPM, final chorus widens while keeping the lead clear, resolved cadence and instrumental outro.
Lyrics & section notes
[Instrumental Intro]
[Verse 1]
You left before the rain.
I watched the morning train.
Your coffee on the shelf
went cold all by itself.
I moved the table round.
I turned the radio down.
But when the day was through,
I kept a place for you.
[Chorus]
The seat beside the window,
the one that holds the light,
I keep it free for you, love,
from morning into night.
The seat beside the window,
come sit here when you can.
No need for every answer.
Just let me hold your hand.
[Verse 2]
Your letter came in May.
You said you might just stay.
You liked the little town.
The work was settling down.
I wrote, I'm doing fine.
The roses need more time.
I added one more line:
Your place is by my side.
[Chorus]
The seat beside the window,
the one that holds the light,
I keep it free for you, love,
from morning into night.
The seat beside the window,
come sit here when you can.
No need for every answer.
Just let me hold your hand.
[Instrumental Interlude]
[Bridge]
You called at half past nine.
The road was wet with rain.
You said, I missed the turning.
I said, Come round again.
I'll leave the porch light burning.
I'll put the kettle on.
No speech and no explaining.
Just tell me when you're home.
[Final Chorus]
The seat beside the window,
the one that holds the light,
no longer waits in silence.
You're sitting here tonight.
The seat beside the window,
your coat, your cup, your hand,
we don't need all the answers.
The kettle sings again.
[Instrumental Outro]
