Flowers rest on the water; their intended recipient is far away.
Mandarin plainchant-and-organum brief · male replies and handbell
Gathering flowers becomes a gift that cannot cross the distance. The published text keeps its original-poem section, new refrain and variation separate. The long road and separation continue into added images of moonlight on a sleeve and someone waiting; those additions are not the original poem.
The arrangement brief borrows medieval plainchant and organum replies for Mandarin male voices, parallel parts, a vocal drone, vielle and handbell. Traditional characters still carry Chinese words. Follow gathering, looking back and sending a gift toward someone far away as an old image enters a different musical space.
