After songs of parting, one for the present. Bossa-nova direction · the shore and the presentWhat do these music words mean? ↓
Walking more slowly than the tide, the narrator finally sits down without hurrying a song into being. Fishing-boat lamps seem to count breaths, and the moon needs no hands to hold it afloat. This song belongs to the present, not another farewell.
The bossa-nova and Brazilian-jazz brief imagines nylon guitar, brushes, upright bass and vibraphone in an unhurried sway. A happy moment need not last long for a song to keep it company a little longer, toward a lighter sea.
The wish to sing this one more lightly holds the seaside moment. Bossa nova is the Brazilian direction of this edition, not another language for its Mandarin words. Follow the pulse and look for unexpected emphasis.
Bossa nova · a light Brazilian rhythmic world · a little more Bossa nova developed in Brazil in the late 1950s, bringing a samba background together with jazz influences. Begin with a light, flowing musical direction, not a synonym for every slow song or café soundtrack. The label does not require Portuguese lyrics or certify a particular instrument.
Try listening: Follow the pulse gently, then notice whether a melody or accompaniment places emphasis somewhere unexpected. The syncopation explanation turns that word into something you can look for.
ISTD · Bossa Nova background (p.13) ↗ Syncopation · emphasis where you least expect it · a little more Music has relatively strong and weak beats, and positions within each beat. A basic way to recognise syncopation is emphasis on a normally weaker position, creating a small rhythmic surprise. It is not simply faster playing or singing out of time.
Try listening: Keep a steady pulse with a finger, then follow the melody’s emphasis. Does it meet your tap, or arrive between taps? Simply following the beat is a good beginning if the difference is not yet clear.

(nylon-string guitar, 4 bars)
[Verse 1]
[Pre-Chorus]
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
[Outro]
