Rest the oar; let a song begin. Creative direction: Chinese folk · two-part sway and answering phrasesWhat do these music words mean? ↓
Rowing and singing take turns, moving on before a phrase has quite settled. Oranges by the bank and a dog on the bridge hurry nobody, and the bridge asks for no destination. The returning word sways like the boat while leaving room for an answer.
The requested 6/8 usually groups six smaller divisions into two sets of three: two larger sways rather than the three beats of 3/4. Plucked phrases and flute replies are arranging requests. Try the two sways, then hear whether the lyric’s alternating voices become musical replies.
Try two gentle three-part sways, then notice where the next phrase takes over. Counting is optional; following the sway is enough.
6/8 time · six subdivisions, two larger beats · a little more In 6/8 a bar holds six eighth-note values, normally grouped three plus three: ONE-two-three, FOUR-five-six. In 3/4 there are normally three beats, each divided in two, so the metres differ. 6/8 specifies neither tempo nor every swaying feel. A source label is a clue, not a measured time signature for this recording.
Try listening: Before following the music, say “ONE-two-three, FOUR-five-six” and tap only ONE and FOUR. Then ask whether those beats fit naturally; if not, set the counting aside.
Open University · Compound time, 6/8 versus 3/4 ↗ Call and response · a musical conversation · a little more In call and response, one voice or instrument offers a phrase and another answers. The answer may echo it or say something different; voices, instruments or sections can converse. It is not every duet or everyone singing simultaneously: listen for a relationship between an opening phrase and its reply.
Try listening: Choose a short phrase and hear who follows: an echo, an addition or a contrasting answer? If everyone simply sings together, do not force a call-and-response reading.

[Verse 1]
小船晃悠悠
河风绕袖口
水里一片柳
跟着我们走
你把桨轻收
我把歌开头
一声还没落
又往前头游
[Chorus]
悠悠啊悠悠
小船晃悠悠
你唱我来和
我唱你点头
悠悠啊悠悠
小船晃悠悠
笑声漂过桥
还在水上留
[Verse 2]
岸边橘子熟
香气过船头
桥上小花狗
摇着尾巴瞅
你把桨轻收
我把歌开头
一声还没落
又往前头游
[Chorus]
悠悠啊悠悠
小船晃悠悠
你唱我来和
我唱你点头
悠悠啊悠悠
小船晃悠悠
笑声漂过桥
还在水上留
[Instrumental Interlude]
[Bridge]
天色慢慢柔
云也不催舟
一只小灯笼
照着你和我
不用问多久
不用问尽头
这一声悠悠
就在心里留
[Final Chorus]
悠悠啊悠悠
小船晃悠悠
你唱我来和
我唱你点头
悠悠啊悠悠
小船晃悠悠
笑声漂过桥
还在水上留
[Instrumental Outro]
